Product Walkthrough
Introduction
Users meet their virtual student veteran coaches. They share their experiences about why they joined the military, how their service changed them, and what it was like to return home and go to school. Users learn about military culture and build empathy for the experiences of military students.
Conversation Challenge: Lena
Users assume the role of a staff member and talk with Lena, a member of the Army Reserves who’s being deployed. She has questions about what that means for her enrollment and GI Bill benefits. Users practice listening, considering the unique needs military students might have, and referring her to a campus official who can help her.
Conversation Challenge: Austin
Users take on the role of a professor and lead a classroom discussion about military spending. The user practices framing the discussion objectively and creating a safe and open discussion environment.
Conversation Challenge: Chris
Users take on the role of a professor and talk with Chris, a student veteran who’s been behaving erratically in class and performing poorly on exams. Chris reveals that he was diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury. Users practice building rapport and making a referral to an appropriate on-campus service.
Conclusion
The virtual coaches and students offer a few final thoughts to reinforce the main takeaways of the simulation and urge users to help military students thrive on campus.
School Specific Resources/Other Resources
Throughout the simulation, users have access to a printable summary of best practices and a list of specific military and mental health resources available on and off-campus. Kognito builds this list as a web page and customizes it for each client.
Program Evaluation and Usage Reports
The simulation is available online 24/7. Users are asked to complete pre-, post-, and three-month follow up surveys to assess changes in skills, attitudes, and behavior. Upon completion of the post-survey, users receive a certificate of completion. Clients can access usage reports and evaluation data via the Kognito client portal.
