Overview

More than 57 million American adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder each year, yet 62% go untreated. Primary care providers act as the first point-of-care for nearly half of the U.S. patient population and are uniquely positioned to identify patients with mental health or substance use disorders by integrating behavioral health into routine care.

Adopted by more than 30 organizations, state agencies, and schools of health professions, this research-proven online solution helps improve the capacity of health professionals to address substance use, mental health, and suicidal ideation as part of routine care. In this simulation, users assume the role of a healthcare professional and talk with two virtual patients about their substance use and mental health disorders.

The goal of Adult Mental Health & Wellness is to improve the quality of substance use and mental health Screening and Brief Intervention.

Learning objectives:

  • Screen patients for depression and substance use using evidence-based tools
  • Recognize risk factors and warning signs of substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation
  • Conduct brief interventions using motivational interviewing techniques
  • Engage in collaboration treatment planning with patients
  • Coordinate referrals to treatment or follow-up care

This simulation has been accepted for review by SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). A study with 425 health professionals shows that it results in statistically significant increases in skills to identify risk factors, screen patients, discuss treatment options, engage in collaborative decision-making, and build intrinsic motivation in patients to adhere to a treatment plan.

Users receive customized feedback based on their in-simulation choices.

The simulation is available online 24/7. Users are asked to complete pre-, post-, and 3-month follow up surveys to assess changes in skills. Attitudes, and behavior. Upon completion, users receive a certificate of completion.  Clients have access to usage reports and evaluation data via the Kognito client portal.
