Overview
LGBTQ Cultural Competency provides individuals with basic LGBTQ cultural competency to improve communication, understanding, and respect within their workplace and with the public. Users learn important vocabulary and concepts central to diversity and inclusion. Users then practice engaging members of the LGBTQ community and addressing biased language in two interactive role-play scenarios, building their confidence to serve as a role model for diversity and inclusion.
This simulation can be used as a stand-alone learning experience; or, in a larger curriculum, it can serve as practice and/or a focal point for discussion.
Learning objectives:
- Learn the definition of basic LGBTQ terms, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer
- Better understand the difference between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation
- Better understand how to talk with someone about biased language
Research shows that with experiential practice, increased emotional engagement and reflective thinking leads to stronger self-efficacy and behavior change.
This simulation was developed in a close collaboration between Kognito's simulation scientists, leading LGBTQ advocates, and Santa Clara County's Office of LGBTQ Affairs.
Users receive customized feedback based on their in-simulation choices.
The simulation is available online 24/7. Users are asked to complete pre-, post-, and 3-month follow up surveys to assess changes in skills. Attitudes, and behavior. Upon completion, users receive a certificate of completion. Clients have access to usage reports and evaluation data via the Kognito client portal.
