Overview

Binge drinking and substance abuse affect up to a quarter of adolescents and young adults in the U.S. Research has shown that early identification and intervention in youth substance use helps improve health outcomes and can save up to $4.00 in healthcare costs for every dollar spent.

Adopted by more than 40 schools of health professions and state agencies, this online solution helps improve patient-provider communication and supports the integration of substance use in SBI in primary care settings. SBI with Adolescents introduces the foundational concepts and then coaches learners through simulated case scenarios to provide them practice and build confidence.

The goal of SBI with Adolescents is to improve the quality of substance use Screening and Brief Intervention.

Learning objectives:

  • Screen patients using evidence-based tools
  • Conduct brief interventions using motivational interviewing techniques
  • Make collaborative action plans with patients
  • Coordinate referrals to treatment or follow-up care

Research shows that with experiential practice, increased emotional engagement and reflective thinking leads to stronger self-efficacy and behavior change.

The content of this simulation was developed in close collaboration between Kognito's simulation scientists and leading experts in the field of SBIRT, including NORC at the University of Chicago.

Users receive customized feedback based on their in-simulation choices.

The simulation is available online 24/7. Users are asked to complete pre-, post-, and 3-month follow up surveys to assess changes in skills. Attitudes, and behavior. Upon completion, users receive a certificate of completion.  Clients have access to usage reports and evaluation data via the Kognito client portal.
