SAMHSA’s 2021 GLS Campus Suicide Prevention Grant
Since 2005, this grant has supported hundreds of suicide prevention programs in higher education. The 2021 GLS grant will award up to $102,000 per year for up to three years, to a maximum of 24 grantees. Kognito is proud to have provided program support to dozens of GLS grantees since 2010.
U.S. public or private universities, community colleges and tribal and minority-serving institutions of higher learning are all eligible to apply. Please read the full 2021 GLS Grant funding announcement and other resources to determine your institution’s eligibility. Institutions with current GLS grant funding are not eligible to apply.
GLS funding has enabled campuses across the U.S. to put Kognito’s online simulations to use to address suicidal behavior, mental health, and substance use. These institutions also benefit from increased student retention that results from these prevention and early intervention strategies.
Outlined below are some ways in which Kognito can support your campus counseling center, psychological services, mental health center, psychology training clinic, or evidence-based mental health and substance use program to address the goals of the 2021 GLS grant.

GLS Grant Activities
The 2021 GLS grant funds must support four activities and may support six others. See details in the tables below.
Required Activities
- Create a network infrastructure to link the institution of higher education with appropriately trained behavioral healthcare providers who treat mental and substance use disorders, including a plan to seek input from relevant
stakeholders in the community, and other appropriate public and private entities to carry out the program. The network shall include knowledge of local behavioral health crisis response services (mobile outreach, crisis services, crisis lifeline call centers, and others) as well as traditional outpatient providers and emergency departments.

How Kognito Meets the Requirement: Kognito integrates a Local Resources page in each simulation that lists relevant on- and off-campus support services and resources as provided by the client. - Train college students, faculty, and staff to respond effectively to college students with mental and substance use disorders.

How Kognito Meets the Requirement: Kognito’s higher education suite includes training programs that are tailored to fit the needs of all learners listed in the grant. Kognito simulations are designed to provide practice for people to have real-life conversations with someone they are concerned about. Learning objectives include identifying, approaching, and referring a student to an appropriate on- or off-campus resource. - Administer voluntary mental and substance use disorder screenings and assessments.

2021 GLS Grant Program Design with Kognito’s Higher Education Products
Kognito has worked with more than 350 institutions to provide a unique cost-effective, research-proven solution. Kognito can rapidly train university faculty, staff, students, and student leaders on skills for suicide prevention, mental health, and substance use. Kognito’s Higher Education Suite addresses the needs of a general student population, as well as those of student veterans.
Kognito’s At-Risk simulation for students is listed on the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) Best Practices Registry as a Program with Evidence of Effectiveness as well as a recommended resource in JED and EDC’s Campus Mental Health Action Planning guide.
Kognito’s interactive, evidence-based simulations address suicide prevention, mental health, and substance use in order to promote help-seeking behavior and reduce stigma. In these role-play conversations, faculty, staff, and students build awareness, knowledge, and skills about these topics and are prepared to lead real-life conversations with students that build resilience, strengthen relationships and connect them with support. As a result, faculty, staff, and students improve the identification and treatment of at-risk college students so they can successfully complete their studies.

Alternatively, some grantees choose to purchase Kognito with their grant funding after they have received a GLS award. GLS applicants may choose not to specify Kognito in their application.
Your 2021 GLS Grant Proposal Timeline
The deadline to submit your application on grants.gov is February 5, 2021. However, if you are interested in applying, SAMHSA recommends starting the registration process immediately. Registering with NIH’s eRA Commons can take up to six weeks. We also recommend building in adequate review time (at least 2-4 weeks) for your grants office to review your proposal.
