Overview
Users are introduced to the virtual coach and learn about psychological distress, how it impacts college students, and what a peer can do when they’re concerned about a friend.

A Friend in Distress
Users interact with several virtual students reflecting a variety of backgrounds and common college struggles, and learn to recognize various signs of distress and coping strategies.

Conversation Skills
Users learn effective techniques in approaching a peer who has shown signs of distress, including avoiding negative labels, focusing on specific, observable behaviors, using “I statements,” using non-judgmental language, and not giving unsolicited advice.

Conversation: Supporting a Friend
Users assume the role of a peer and talk with Travis, a fellow student who has been posting sad things online and has not been in touch with his friends recently. The users' goal is to find out how he's doing, educate him about available support services, and encourage him to make an appointment.

Taking Care of Yourself
The virtual coach recaps the importance of supporting peers and what users can do if their friend refuses to seek assistance or if they are not comfortable talking with a peer.

School Specific Resources/Other Resources
Throughout the simulation, users have access to a printable summary and a web page that includes a list of specific mental health resources available. Kognito customizes this web page for each client.

Program Evaluation and Usage Reports
The simulation is available online 24/7. Users are asked to complete pre-, post-, and 2-month follow up surveys to assess changes in skills, attitudes, and behavior. Upon completion, users receive a certificate of completion. Clients have access to usage reports and evaluation data via the Kognito client portal.
