Product Walkthrough
Introduction
Users meet their virtual coach and learn about mental health and how to to identify at-risk students, approach them and their parents, and connect them to helpful resources.
Identifying Students in Distress
Users learn warning signs of distress and examine several case studies. They learn that, while educators aren't expected to diagnose students, they are in an ideal position to identify emerging problems and connect students to resources that can help.
Bringing Up Concerns
Users learn and practice techniques for bringing up concerns in a way that maximizes discussion and minimizes hurt feelings and defensiveness. These techniques include discussing specific observations, using “I” statements, using neutral language, and having genuine curiosity.
Conversation Challenge: Ms. Parker
Users assume the role of a 5th-grade teacher as he talks with the mom of a student who's been acting out in class. Users practice bringing up concerns, problem-solving ways to better support kids in school, and making a referral to counseling.
Listening Actively
Users learn and practice how to use reflecting statements to encourage students to open up. They are useful for building rapport and understanding the student, which makes problem-solving more effective.
Connecting Students
Users learn strategies to effectively make referrals. They also learn the importance of familiarizing themselves with policies and resources in their area. Users also learn about risk factors and warning signs of suicide.
Conversation Challenge: Derrick
Users assume the role of a teacher and talk with a student in third grade. Derrick is prone to worrying, and has recently been struggling more than usual with activities and assignments. Users practice building trust, bringing up concerns, and problem solving.
Local and National Resources
Throughout the simulation, users have access to a printable summary of best practices and a list of specific mental health resources available nationally and in their area. Kognito builds this list as a web page and customizes it for each client.
Program Evaluation and Usage Reports
The simulation is available online 24/7. Users are asked to complete pre-, post-, and 3-month follow up surveys to assess changes in skills, attitudes, and behavior. Upon submitting their post-survey, users receive a certificate of completion. Clients have access to usage reports and evaluation data via the Kognito client portal.
