Emotional & Mental Wellness for Teachers & School Staff

Overview

Similar to Kognito's flagship At-Risk program, this 30-minute version builds awareness, knowledge and skills around emotional and mental health, as well as suicide prevention. With an SEL and trauma-informed lens, the program prepares learners to lead real-life conversations that build resilience, strengthen relationships, and connect students with appropriate support. The Emotional & Mental Wellness program introduces new features such as an optional advanced practice scenario and the inclusion of de-escalation and mindfulness techniques.

Emotional & Mental Wellness for Educators & Staff is part of the Mental Health and Well-being Suite which takes a whole child approach to building awareness, knowledge, and skills around emotional and mental wellness, including scenarios where adolescents learn to identify signs of trauma or distress. Educators and staff have access to customized national, local, and school-specific resources in addition to simulation content.

The goal of Emotional & Mental Wellness for Educators & Staff is to prepare teachers, administrators, and school staff to lead real-life conversations that create a more positive environment, work to build greater resilience, strengthen relationships, and connect students with appropriate support.

Learning objectives:

  • Increase awareness, knowledge and skills around emotional and mental wellness
  • Identify warning signs of distress, including verbal, behavioral, and situational indicators, as well as suicidal thoughts and risk
  • Utilize effective communication techniques with students to discuss concerns, strengthen relationships, build resilience, and increase connectedness
  • Understand the need for referral and distinguish best type of support, while understanding how to motivate a student to be receptive to additional help

Evidence-based models and techniques, game mechanics, and key learning and assessment principles ensure users stay engaged and emerge with a deeper understanding of their ability to use their new skills in real life. Research shows that with experiential practice, increased emotional engagement and reflective thinking leads to stronger self-efficacy and behavior change.

Experienced teachers, child psychologists, and childcare experts contributed to the simulation content.

Learners self-select as an Elementary/Middle or High School educator and receives customized feedback based on their in-simulation choices.

The simulation is available online 24/7. Users are asked to complete pre-, post-, and 3-month follow up surveys to assess changes in skills. Attitudes, and behavior. Upon completion, users receive a certificate of completion.  Clients have access to usage reports and evaluation data via the Kognito client portal.
