Moving Beyond Compliance: Webinar Recap

We recently held a webinar highlighting our new compliance-based Sexual Misconduct Prevention Suite and how Kognito is leading the way in helping colleges and universities create safer and more inclusive campus communities using virtual training. The two simulations included in this suite, for both faculty and students, are igniting a culture shift on campuses across the country by ensuring that all members of the campus community have the skills to effectively recognize, report, and prevent misconduct.

In this webinar, Kim Wieland, Product Manager at Kognito, and Ann Todd, Title IX Consultant and subject matter expert, highlight the importance our sexual misconduct training programs have in creating and sustaining a supportive, safe, and inclusive campus culture. Igniting a Culture Shift

In this webinar, Kim and Ann have an in-depth discussion about each module of our Sexual Misconduct Prevention for Faculty & Staff simulation, highlighting the practice scenarios and what users are expected to learn.

“This is really the area that sets us apart and gives the ability to build self-efficacy around some of these conversations.” -Kim Wieland, Product Manager at Kognito

The first module in this program is the Title IX compliant practice scenario where users, acting as either a professor or a coach, effectively navigate a conversation with a disclosure of possible sexual misconduct. Techniques used in this module include empathic listening, showing support, and knowing when and where to report and refer to support services. Through the practice scenario, learners will also discover the pitfalls that may occur when having these difficult conversations. These pitfalls include stating common misconceptions or judgments, asking too many questions, pushing your agenda, and/or trying to solve the issue by yourself.

The final practice scenario, Sexual Harassment & Discrimination, allows users to effectively navigate a conversation with a peer about harmful language. Techniques in this module include practicing asking open-ended questions, reflections, and the Ask-Tell-Ask technique. Pitfalls that can occur in these conversations, and are taught in the simulation, include asking closed-ended and/or judgmental questions, and sharing opinions, facts, or perspectives without asking.

“There’s no better way to practice this type of conversation except for in this kind of setting where no one is watching, and you are able to do it over and over again and try different ways and see how that felt. I think we can do this [simulation] and come out of it with better ways of having all kinds of different conversations, not just in the workplace but in other aspects of our lives as well.” -Ann Todd, Title IX Consultant and Subject Matter Expert
