Overview
Gender-Affirming Care builds healthcare provider cultural competency in support of transgender individuals and deeper understanding of the specific health challenges faced by the transgender community. This interactive learning experience provides practice with a virtual patient, building learners' skills and confidence to lead real-world, complex conversations.
This simulation can be used as practice and a focal point for discussion, to help learners increase their confidence and preparedness to use motivational interviewing and deliver gender-affirming care.
Learning objectives:
- Explore social determinants of health and incorporate gender-affirming conversation techniques to guide patient care
- Incorporate open-ended, gender-affirming questions to elicit patient preferences, needs, barriers and goals
- Use relationship-centered communication techniques to address smoking cessation, hypertension, and depression with patients
Research shows that with experiential practice, increased emotional engagement and reflective thinking leads to stronger self-efficacy and behavior change.
This simulation was developed through close collaboration between Kognito's simulation scientists, MI experts, and healthcare providers specialized in transgender care and advocacy.
Users receive customized feedback based on their in-simulation choices.
The simulation is available online 24/7. Users are asked to complete pre-, post-, and 3-month follow up surveys to assess changes in skills. Attitudes, and behavior. Upon completion, users receive a certificate of completion. Clients have access to usage reports and evaluation data via the Kognito client portal.
