Primary Care Office Visit: Antibiotics
Kognito’s Primary Care Office Visit: Antibiotics clinical training simulation was developed with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The simulated conversation depicts an office visit between a physician and a patient and features virtual coaching from Dr. Martin Blaser, one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and the Chair of the President’s Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (CARB). Users can choose to play the role of the physician and see how well they do in building trust, collaborating on a treatment plan, and addressing the patient’s request for antibiotics. Alternatively, users can play the role of the patient talking to a virtual physician and learn about indicated use of antibiotics, and practice how to get clear answers to their questions, and end the visit with a plan that fits their needs.
The simulation is freely available to the public and has been featured on the CDC’s Get Smart about Antibiotics site, Consumer Reports’, and the ABIM Foundation’s Choosing Wisely campaign. In a research study conducted by the NYU School of Medicine, the simulation showed a positive impact on collaborative communication and shared decision-making between healthcare providers and patients.
